Nicholas Bagnall

Chief Investment Officer, Director, founder, and major shareholder

Nicholas has worked in investment management for over 34 years, and has over 12 years’ experience of managing global equity portfolios.

Prior to establishing Te Ahumairangi Investment Management, Nicholas was Chief Investment Officer at ACC. He spent 26 years with ACC’s investment team, and played a key role in setting up the intellectual framework and driving the long term success of ACC’s Investments. During his time at ACC, Nicholas managed portfolios in a variety of investment markets over different periods of time, including Global Equities, NZ Equities, NZ bonds, listed property, listed emerging market trusts, and Australian equities. All of these portfolios outperformed their benchmarks on a like-for-like-tax basis during the time that Nicholas directly managed them at ACC. Nicholas was also responsible for asset allocation, and managed futures positions that ACC used to adjust its allocation between investment markets. Nicholas managed a global portfolio at ACC starting from March 2011, and through Te Ahumairangi continues to play a key role in the management of this portfolio for ACC.

Nicholas had worked in AMP’s investment team for over 4 years prior to joining ACC. He has Bachelor of Business Studies in Economics and Finance.

Megan Allen

Office Manager

Megan has worked in Office Administration and Management for over 25 years. Over the course of her career she has utilised her office management skills in several sectors – legal, investment banking, broking and not-for-profit.  Prior to joining Te Ahumairangi, she was employed by Woodward Partners in the role of Office Manager.

Helen Stevens

Manager of Operations
and Compliance

Helen has worked in the financial markets industry for over 30 years in senior compliance and operations roles.  Over the course of her career, she has worked for brokers, fund managers, and custodians and has a very broad knowledge of front, middle and back offices and financial products and relevant systems used.  Although Helen has worked mainly in New Zealand, she has also worked in the industry in London and Tokyo.  Prior to joining Te Ahumairangi, she was employed by Jarden (formerly First NZ Capital and CSFB) in the roles of Director – Wellington Compliance Manager and previously Vice President - Head of Operations. 

Ian Graham

Senior Analyst

Ian has had a 20+ year career in the NZ equity and capital markets, working in analyst roles on both the sell-side (Forsyth Barr from 1997-2003 and Citi from 2003-2007) and buy-side (ACC from 2007-2012, where he worked with Nicholas Bagnall).  

Family circumstance took Ian to Dunedin in 2013 where he pursued a wide variety of opportunities including M&A, capital raising and other strategic work for Scott Technology along with self-employed consulting work for local venture capital participants.  He resumed sell-side research in 2017 for Woodward Partners.

Ian is a true generalist, having been involved with research coverage on most industry sectors, including transport, resources, electricity & utilities, general industrial, healthcare, retail and agriculture.  His work has also covered large-cap, mid-cap, small-cap and start-up.  

Jack Crowley

Senior Analyst

Jack joined Te Ahumairangi in 2020. Prior to joining Te Ahumairangi, Jack was a Director in the Equity Research team at Jarden. During his five years at Jarden, Jack’s primary research coverage included a range of companies from the agriculture, healthcare, financials, and tourism sectors. These included some of NZ’s largest and most dynamic businesses such as Fisher & Paykel Healthcare and a2 Milk.

Jack is a CFA Charterholder (Charted Financial Analyst) and holds Master of Business (Finance, Distinction) and Bachelor of Commerce degrees from the University of Otago.

Prithvi Sharma

Analyst

Prithvi Sharma is an equity analyst at Te Ahumairangi, having joined the team in 2020. He holds a Bachelor of Science majoring in Computer Science and Mathematics and a Bachelor of Finance from the Australian National University.

Whilst completing tertiary qualifications, Prithvi worked in a research capacity for three years for Enerlytica, an energy consultancy and at an equity broker. Prithvi is also a reservist for the New Zealand Defence Force.

Blair Sutherland

Director, Business Development

Prior to joining Te Ahumairangi in 2022, Blair had a successful 20+ year Investment Banking career at Forsyth Barr as a Director in their Investment Banking Team and more recently as Head of Equity Capital Markets. 

During this time Blair was responsible for leading a range of equity capital market, debt capital market and M&A/advisory roles. This included working with a number of leading Australasian companies on various significant and industry awarded transactions across a broad range of sectors.

Blair has a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws from the University of Canterbury.

Richard Bodman

Independent Director
& Chair

Richard is an Independent Director and the Board Chair of Te Ahumairangi. He has spent more than 25 years’ working in the financial services sector, including 17 years at Jarden (previously First NZ Capital) where he held several executive roles, such as Managing Director and Head of Compliance, and was a director from 2002 until Oct 2015. He was also a Director at Harbour Asset Management Limited from 2010 to Oct 2015, and served as a Director of NZX Limited from 2017 until December 2022. He is currently an Independent Director of Forsyth Barr Custodians Limited, Forsyth Barr Cash Management Nominees Limited, and Octagon Asset Management Limited. He has held these positions since July 2016 and November 2021 respectively.  He is a member of the Institute of Directors.

Richard has in depth experience of influencing and overseeing the conduct of financial services businesses and ensuring the governance and compliance frameworks are fit for purpose and work effectively. He has a strong knowledge of investment markets and the risks involved. 

Stephen Montgomery

Independent Director

Stephen is an Independent Director of Te Ahumairangi. He has worked in the financial markets since 1976 and brings considerable experience, having worked in both New Zealand and Australia. Amongst the variety of roles held, Stephen has managed trading operations and been a portfolio manager at ACC and Aspiring Asset Management. He formed Aspiring Asset Management with two partners in 2005 with the objective of establishing an equities-orientated PIE fund, which was launched in February 2006. He retired from his roles as portfolio manager and director of Aspiring in 2020.
